Treatment of an early 19th Century Baby Walker
Description
Composite object was fabricated by hand. Wooden structure consists of thirteen mismatched pieces. Top section (ring, tray, and seat) may be original to piece and store bought. Metal elements commercially manufactured. Ring is dislodged on three ends. Initially nailed to support. Iron springs attached to top ring. Wooden seat in suspension. Previously secured to leather straps and springs. Iron wheels nailed to cross support.
Wooden object is painted a dark matte brown. Areas of loss reveal a light wood. Canvas strap is cream. Metals are dark brown where not corroded. Leather straps are dark matte brown with hints of red and a lighter brown.
Overall, condition of object is fair – wood is stable, however, paint layer is flaking. Metals are in various states of corrosion from passive to active. Leather condition is poor in some areas: dehydrated and cracking. Textile condition is good – stable.
